Signs of life in Hua Hin

Report from a hardship posting called gay Hua Hin

By gay Suzy Size who knows everything about gay Hua Hin

Hua Hin has never had a bustling gay scene like Pattaya or Phuket. But now the interested visitor might add a small s to the three S's that stand for Sea, Sand and Sun. And that in a Hua Hin gay sense.

by Suzy Size

I guess it was around 1984 that I went to not so gay Hua Hin for the first time. The renovated Railway Hotel had just opened as Sofitel Hotel, carpenters were still doing some additional and very noisy work and, besides the old part, there was still an ugly 8-story concrete building. Fortunately this eyesore of gay and not so gay Hua Hin was later dismantled and replaced by the New Wing that was built in the same style as the old part and, some years later, the Garden Wing was added and the main entrance shifted to the position where it now is. I was then still living in Europe and-being much younger and (would you believe it?) a bit shy or inhibited-enjoyed my first quiet holidays in that sleepy old place that not so gay Hua Hin then was. There was not much to do in the evenings, so I went back early to gay Bangkok and its then famous Rome Club. After all, Thailand had a certain reputation and I had come because of that. You, on the other hand, probably came strictly for culture, no? The absence of any gay places in Hua Hin was a perfect cover.

I came back to not very openly gay Hua Hin year after year, going in my then so very correct European way to a presentable place from where I could send demure postcards to Mom, Dad and the colleagues at work. From Hua Hin that was not perceived as a gay sex destianation. The nights were still a bit dull but at least I had got to know Dam and his Friendship Restaurant for drinks and food and very occasional encounters. The Friendship Restaurant was the meeting place for the friends of Dorothy (actually that was gay Hua Hin) and some of Dam's waiters were quite accommodating. Of course, there were certain forms and rules to be observed in closeted gay Hua Hin. Never did a waiter and your brave gay Suzy Size leave the restaurant at the same moment in haste, there had to be a pause of at least 33 seconds between those two incidents: first him leaving on his motorcycle, then me driven by a motorcycle taxi, ending up-what a coincidence!-in the same nest gay Hua Hin. Everybody, of course, knew what was going on, but everybody could also pretend to have not a clue. This, dear sisters, is so important in this fair land. It is true all over, also in gay Hua Hin.

When I finally moved to Thailand, my visits to hidden gay Hua Hin became rare. Gay Pattaya was easier and definitely more fun and the need to send decorous postcards lessened. However, I met Dam again at gay Bangkok Balcony the other night and he told me things had changed in not so gay Hua Hin. As you know, seeing is believing, so a gay life live investigation in good old Hua Hin was undertaken.

We met at the New Friendship Restaurant in gay Hua Hin, which is located in the square between the Shopping Mall on Petchkasem Road and the Tanawit Hotel. This is definitely the spot to start a gay evening in old Hua Hin. Food and drinks are available at the Friendship and if you happen to be interested in white balls, you can book your Golf Tour with Pi Dam.

Right next door there is "Doi Boys" a subsidiary of the bar with the same name in gay Chiang Mai. But since there are no gay Go Go Bars in Hua Hin, it stages a cabaret show instead. A beautiful Katoey (ladyboy) from gay Nong Khai was spotted and greeted by your gay Suzy Size in a most sisterly manner. That is gay Hua Hin in essence!

But, sadly, we had no time for hanky panky. Dam and I were terribly hungry and wanted to try the food at Bali Thai Restaurant just opposite Friendship. This gay-friendly, gay-managed restaurant in Hua Hin is owned by an Englishman and his lover. They serve Thai and international cuisine. Worth a try, remember there is not too much to do in gay Hua Hin. During the high season they will also have an outdoor cabaret show in this gay Hua Hin venue.

Later I moved for a beer to the gay Hua Hin Faqthong Restaurant and Bar in walking distance just around the corner (check out the map). If you should think Faqthong is an encouragement to do something immoral to Thong you got it completely wrong, as usual. This beautiful name also does not stand for frequently asked questions about Thong as one might think, it means pumpkin in Thai. Manager Khun Pom and his long-time lover Yves have, just recently, opened their cosy place that has a cute little garden for gay Hua Hin. The restaurant, with a predominantly wood decor, is normally open from 11 till midnight or even later. All their waiters are gay but cannot be offed. Such are the strict rules in gay Hua Hin. What they might do after work in gay Hua Hin is, however, their own business. Even though the Faqthong is more gay than just gay-friendly, they have promised not to discriminate against straights. How kind they are in gay Hua Hin.

The newest venue opening in gay Hua Hin is "Guys" gay sauna and gay massage. It is owned by our old friend Khun Dam and his business partner Khun Tossaporn and is located in Naresdamri Road. Easy to find in small gay Hua Hin: you pass Bookazine and walk on as if you wanted to go to the Sofitel. After about 200 m gay "Guys" is found on the right. Presently they have two regular gay Hua Hin massage rooms and one gay VIP room and, in the welcoming area, there is a bar with drinks and snacks. They offer herbal steam and, of course, gay Hua Hin massages for men by men. Taking pictures there was great fun, the six masseurs posing had a ball (or more!). At last, some gay life in Hua Hin!

Before going back to the Gay Hua Hin Friendship, we made another stop at the gay Red Indian Bar in the Hua Hin Bazaar and at Willys Station nearby, where they have a cabaret show on Mondays und Thursdays. Quite fun. And not far from there you find Palladium with daily shows. Back at Friendship your gay Suzy Size chatted and flirted for maybe two hours with a fairly attractive guy that had the potential of becoming the companion for that night in gay Hua Hin but was a bit hesitant after the recent and bitter divorce from his gay farang partner. He finally agreed to come up to the room but, before anything interesting could happen, decided he was not "ready yet" for anything new and left abruptly. Gay Suzy Size, having had a busy and rather liquid night, was more amused than disappointed. So you see, there are definitely a few slight signs of gay life in Hua Hin taking root, but still gay Hua Hin needs some more gay guys from Isan to settle.
